Donald Trump\u2019s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said on Thursday evening that the forthcoming working group between Denmark, the United States and Greenland is to focus on a potential American takeover of Greenland.<\/p>\n

This directly contradicts what Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen (Danish Foreign Minister) said on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n

Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen said yesterday after the meeting with the Americans that they had agreed to disagree, and that the meeting had gone well \u201cunder the circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement from the White House this evening\u2014that the meeting did not change Trump\u2019s position\u2014aligns with the impression the foreign minister himself took away from the talks.<\/p>\n

Speaking to DR Nyheder<\/a> this evening, the foreign minister repeated that he is still \u201cleft with a sense that the American president continues to want to own Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n

L\u00f8kke rules out takeover of Greenland<\/h3>\n

Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen states unequivocally in the interview that an American takeover of Greenland will not take place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not an option. We do not want it in Denmark, we do not want it in Greenland, and it would be contrary to all international rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoreover, it is not necessary in order to meet what were\u2014at least as defined yesterday\u2014the American interests,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

However, there is agreement with the Americans on one point:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are facing long-term security challenges, and they must be addressed. That requires American engagement, but it does not require an American takeover of Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Respect<\/h3>\n

DR<\/a>\u2019s US correspondent Kim Bilds\u00f8e has just spoken with Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen and asked him about the White House\u2019s statement that the new working group agreed upon after yesterday\u2019s meeting is to \u201ccontinue talks on a takeover of Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am clearly left with the impression that the American president still wants to own Greenland. I also said that yesterday. That much is clear. It is a wish he has.\u201d<\/p>\n

L\u00f8kke adds that it is Denmark\u2019s task to ensure that this wish is not realised.<\/p>\n

“That is why what we agreed yesterday was to agree to disagree on this issue and to try to initiate a high-level dialogue with respect for the Kingdom of Denmark’s red lines. That is what we agreed,\u201d the foreign minister stresses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
